1950年代前期，前蘇聯空軍需要一款高速攔截機，以擊落入侵的戰機與轟炸機，因而發展出米格-21(MiG-21)戰機(北約稱為魚床式Fishbed)。自1956年量產起，獲得多數共產國家採用與外銷第三世界國家。

MiG-21採用機鼻進氣、單座、單發動機、三角中單翼設計。由於強調高空、高速性能，因此省去了不必要的油料與裝備搭載，但航程也相當短，成為一款短程攔截機。

MiG-21高空纏鬥性能相當好，在越戰期間令美軍F-4戰機吃足苦頭，印巴戰爭期間，印度空軍MiG-21也有擊落巴基斯坦F-104戰機的紀錄。包括台灣、美國與北約組織空軍都曾將MiG-21視為頭號假想敵，成立假想敵中隊研擬應付之道；美軍更研發出空戰纏鬥性能優異的F-16戰機，可見MiG-21對西方國家制空權發展影響之大。

前蘇聯一共生產約5000多架MiG-21系列戰機，並外銷20多國，直到1980年代才從前蘇聯空軍退役；連同東歐共產國家與印度授權生產、大陸仿製的殲-7，一共生產超過1萬架，可能是20世紀生產最多的噴射戰機。
