台東家扶中心為貧困學子籌措下學期學費，將在8月24日、25日舉辦義賣，但對募集物資近1個月來卻，還募不到往年的3分之1，社工表示：「面臨到前所未有窘境」，期望各界將全新或狀況良好物資送給該中心，幫助台東2000多位貧困學子順利就學。

台東家扶中心7月初開始募集物資，為「愛市集」義賣做準備。社工林于庭表示，今年徵求「全新」或8成新物資，但1個月來，每日僅零星物資送達，與往年義賣每日都有大批物資送抵的情況相較，根本不足兩天義賣活動使用，令人憂心忡忡。

林于庭說明，會強調「全新」是礙於每年有大批人力耗在整理二手物資上，不但整理不完，最多也僅有2分之1可義賣用，造成很大的困擾。

他認為，可能捐贈者對「全新」有所猶豫，其實只要狀況良好的物品，都可收。

台東家扶中心表示，最受歡迎的義買品為家電用品、服飾、包包、書籍、文具、玩具等物品，目前所收到的物資以衣物、文具及玩具最多。

近幾年來，美國的衰弱成了常見的爭論主題。其中，多數的討論集中在金融海嘯後帶來的長期衰退，以及中國的崛起打壓了美國。這些人多數是國際關係專家，從經濟競爭力角度檢視地緣政治，將全球秩序想像為一個蹺蹺板，一方的崛起，必然意味有另一方衰落。

但完全專注於經濟指標，導致他們沒有注意到另一個影響——美國嚴重精神病發病率的日漸上升（這一比率已經多年保持在高水位）。

嚴重精神病的普遍程度已經達到了「傳染病」級別，我們經常能夠聽到這種論調，以至於已經見怪不怪了。這些疾病中的最常見者——憂鬱症，從症狀來說是最不複雜的，但也是最致命的：據統計，20%的憂鬱症患者會走上自殺之路。

但躁鬱症和精神分裂症都屬於精神病範疇，其特徵是患者無法控制自身行為和思想，發作具有周期性，發作時患者不能被視為擁有自由意志的行為人。沉溺於自殺的想法和缺少動機使憂鬱症患者也可以被歸為精神病。

美國國家精神衛生研究所（US National Institute of Mental Health，NIMH）2001—2003年進行的一項大規模統計研究估算，美國成年人（18—54歲）終身嚴重憂鬱症發病率為16%以上。終身精神分裂症患病率約為1.7%。這些慢性疾病沒有已知的治療方法；首次發作（通常在18歲之前）後，就可能一直持續到患者生命終結。

對美國大學生進行的調查表明，2010年有20%的受訪者符合憂鬱症和焦慮症標準，2012年則有25%。其他研究也一致表明，每一代人的發病率都在增加，有人指出，如果舊的統計數字是錯的，則錯在低估了精神疾病的普遍性。
